시놉시스Synopsis

동두천 출신인 칠수는 생계 수단인 극장 미술부 일을 그만두고, 간판을 그리는 일을 하는 도공 만수의 조수로 일하게 된다. 미국에 사는 누나가 초대해 주기만을 기다리는 칠수와, 아버지가 반공법으로 장기복역 중이라 연좌제로 고통 받는 만수. 칠수는 미대생이라 속인 채 여대생 지나와 사귀지만 실연당하고, 누나의 연락마저 끊기자 휘청거린다. 고층건물 옥상의 거대한 간판 작업을 마친 어느 날, 두 사람은 옥상 광고탑에서 푸념 섞인 이야기를 쏟아낸다. 술을 먹고 세상을 향해 소리치며 광고탑 위에서 자유를 만끽하던 둘은 시국 문제로 항의하는 시위자로 오인되고, 시민과 경찰, 기자들이 몰려들면서 사태는 심각한 국면으로 치닫는다. 많은 사랑을 받은 동명 연극을 토대로 하며, 소외된 두 인물의 삶을 통해 레드 콤플렉스와 아메리칸 드림, 암울한 80년대의 사회상을 풍자적으로 담아낸 작품으로 코리안 뉴웨이브의 시작을 알린 박광수 감독의 데뷔작이다.

Born in Dongduchon, Chil-su is talented in art. While waiting for a wedding invitation from his sister in America, Chil-su quits his job painting theater signs which is his livelihood. He becomes Man-su's assistant. Man-su is in the army serving his military duty. He suffers under the dark shadow of his father. Chil-su gets dumped by Ji-na, a college student, and he loses all contacts with his sister. Understandably, Chil-su feels a little shaken. On the other hand, Man-su is unable to find stability. One night after they finished a large billboard, the two rave around the tower goofing around. However, the police are deployed when they misunderstand and think that they are trying to kill themselves.
