시놉시스Synopsis

40대의 유명 작가 이준섭은 치매를 앓아 온 노모가 돌아가셨다는 연락을 받고 고향을 찾는다. 노모의 죽음과 장례의 과정은 많은 사람들에게 각각 다른 감정을 불러 일으킨다. 오랫동안 시어머니를 모셔 온 형수는 만감이 교차하고, 준섭의 어린 딸 은지는 자신을 아껴 주던 할머니에 대한 추억을 떠올린다. 기자인 장혜림은 준섭의 문학세계를 재조명하는 기사를 위해 장례식의 이모저모를 취재한다. 오래 전 집안의 돈을 훔쳐 가출했던 이복 조카 용순이 돌아오자, 장례식을 계기로 모인 가족들 간의 갈등과 다사다난한 가족사가 점점 드러난다. 그러나 장례식이 진행됨에 따라 가족들은 고인과 함께 한 삶을 돌아보게 되고, 갈등을 넘어 고인에게 받은 큰 사랑과 삶의 지혜를 되새긴다. 이청준의 소설 원작을 토대로 한 임권택 감독의 영화로, 죽은 이를 떠나 보내는 장례문화와 남은 이들 간의 갈등 및 치유의 과정을 통해 삶의 희로애락과 가족의 의미를 돌아보게 하는 작품이다.

Lee Joon-sup is a famous writer in his 40s. One day, he is informed that his mother who has been ill for more than 5 years has died. Before he goes to his mother's house in the countryside to assist with the funeral, he is busy cancelling all his appointments and telling everyone about his mother's death. A journalist, Jang Hae-rim, comes to the funeral to write an article about Joon-sup's literary world. The funeral starts and enmity among the family of the deceased deepens as Joon-sup's niece, Yong-soon, arrives. However, by the end of the funeral, Yong-soon cries after reading Joon-sup's fairy tale, and the relatives come to understand each other better. When the funeral ends, all the relatives cherish the wisdom and love of life of Joon-sup's deceased mother.
