시놉시스Synopsis

과거의 잘못을 반추하며 부끄러움을 느끼는 것이 배움의 완성처럼 보이지만, 공동체의 일원이 다 함께 잘못을 인정하고 이를 교훈 삼아 성장으로 나아가는 것이야말로 우리가 가야할 종착지이다. <연대: 이 땅에서 먹고 살기 위하여>는 과거의 상처를 딛고 북미 원주민들의 식량 주권 회복 운동이 일궈낸 성과를 기념하기 위해 만들어진 다큐멘터리다. 선조들이 사용해온 식재료를 되찾기 위한 아파치 보호구역 요리사의 야심찬 프로젝트, 부족들의 방식으로 버팔로 목장을 운영하며 지속가능한 환경을 위해 노력하는 라코타 고등학교 학생, 연어 어종 보호를 위해 캘리포니아 북부의 강 복원을 시작한 유록 원주민 청년 모임 등 수세기 동안 이어져온 학살의 상처를 이겨내고 자신들의 뿌리와 정체성을 되찾으려는 북미 원주민들과 이들을 이끌어온 활동가들의 모습이 카메라에 담겼다. 선조의 방식 그대로 음식을 구하고 먹을 권리를 요구하는 식량 주권 회복 운동은 건강권과 자기결정권을 되찾아옴으로써 완성되는 북미 원주민들의 정체성이 녹아든 저항과 생존의 방식이다.
People think the point of learning about the negatives that happened is to make people feel guilty. But it is our mission to take collective ownership of mistakes our country has made so that we learn and grow. Gather celebrates the fruits of the indigenous food sovereignty movement, profiling innovative changemakers in Native American tribes across North America reclaiming their identities after centuries of physical and cultural genocide. On the Apache reservation, a chef embarks on an ambitious project to reclaim his tribe’s ancient ingredients; in South Dakota, a gifted Lakota high school student, raised on a buffalo ranch, is using science to prove her tribe’s native wisdom about environmental sustainability; and in Northern California, a group of young men from the Yurok tribe is struggling to rehabilitate its rivers to protect the salmon. The reclaiming and recovery of ancient foodways provides a form of resistance and survival, collectively bringing back health and self-determination to their people.
